The First Squad. The first Russian Anime.

Of course, it's always easier to criticizes something create by someone else, rather than create it with your own hands. But you have the full right to expect a bit more from a such expected picture as the "First Squad" (AKA "Faasuto Sukuwaddo") from 4°C Studio directed by Yoshiharu Ashino. This Anime, which story has been written by Russian Aljosha Klimov, tells a mystical story of a fight of Russian scouts (called Pioneers) against ancient German crusaders, but in the days of World War II (AKA "Great Patriotic War" in Russia). No wonder - tickets for its' premier during Moscow Film Festival has been sold out in under a 5 hours. The same happened with the tickets for the additional screening, that has been gracefully organized by the festival committee.

But, once again, you can expect something more from such a famous film. And as for my point view it's all about the interviews that authors inserted between the scenes. The main issue with them is that they are not drawn, but shot on usual film (or digital - that doesn't matter). For the first time it looks strange or even funny, or you see a veteran, and you will listen to him, just because of a respect to him. But then... all this fake scientists and historians, they just distract you from the story and gets you feel like story-writer failed to fill in the gaps between scenes.

But let's be generous. This is the first Russian Anime, at least. And it is really funny to see All-Union Agricultural Exhibition (VSKhV) or Russian monk fighting, all drawn in Anime-style. So make sure you don't miss it, when it will finally hit the theaters this Autumn - the experience watching it with a crowd worth it!
